Dry Cleaning - if your futon cover requires dry cleaning, you will need to find a reputable cleaner. The following websites may assist you with finding one in your area:
Spot Cleaning - removing small spots from your futon should be done on those covers that can not be washed or dry cleaned. You will need the following:
Mild, non-bleach detergent
Water
Sponge
Clean White Clothes
Small bucket or large bowl
Mix small amount of detergent with water in the bucket/bowl.
Moisten the sponge in the detergent water and gently rub the spot you are cleaning until the dirt is removed. Be careful not to saturate the are because the extra water will soak into the mattress and can cause more problems if it does not dry properly.
Use the clean white towels to wipe off any remaining soap and soak up surface water.
Rinse out the sponge thoroughly and re-moisten with fresh water.
Use sponge to rinse area and remove all soap. Be thorough in rinsing or the soap will leave a white residue after it dries.
Gently blot the towel to press out any remaining water and dry the area as much as possible.
Washable - You will need - washer / dryer and detergent.
Begin by removing the futon cover.
Locate the tag on the outside and review any special cleaning instructions.
If your futon does not have any care instructions, you can either default to those instructions or have it dry cleaned.
Pre-treat stains or spots that need special care with your choice of stain remover. Be sure it is safe for the fabric type of your futon cover.
Place the cover in the washing machine. If should fit loosely, if you have to 'stuff' it in the washing machine, then your machine is too small and you will need to take it to a laundromat where they have oversized washers and dryers.
Add the appropriate amounts of laundry detergent. Use caution with detergents containing bleach as they may discolor your cover.
Wash the cover using the cold wash / cold rinse cycle unless your care instructions specify to use warm water.
When complete, remove cover from the washer and place in dryer. Again, if your dryer is too small to allow proper circulation of air during drying cycle, take it to a laundromat to use oversized dryers.
Tumble dry on the heat setting suggested on the care instructions. If no instructions are available, use the 'low heat' or 'no heat' setting until the cover is completely dry.
